Washington County Judicial CenterSpringfield, Kentucky | 38,000 Square Feet | Existing Courthouse circa 1815 | Abraham Lincoln Memorial Plaza The last time public officials in Washington County, Kentucky developed a new courthouse, Abraham Lincoln was five years old. The existing Washington County Courthouse is the official site where the marriage license of Lincoln’s parents Nancy Hanks, and Thomas Lincoln was filed, and still remains today. The site that was selected for the new 38,000 square foot Judicial Center is located directly across the street from the existing courthouse. As part of the site master planning, members of the building committee and the firm discussed plans to develop a memorial plaza commemorating President Lincoln’s origins to this area. The entrance of the building was designed approximately 60 feet from the street so that sufficient space could be programmed for the plaza. A national search was conducted for the artist would be commissioned to sculpt the statue of President Lincoln. The Judicial Center was programmed by the Administrative Office of the Courts of the Commonwealth of Kentucky Justice Department. It includes all District, Circuit and Family Court operations, as well as the offices of the Circuit Court Clerk. Funding for these projects has been provided by the Kentucky General Assembly. |
