Clague Park Playground

Westlake, OH

Budget

$350,000

Size

0.5 acres

Scope

As the final phase of the Clague Park Pool project, the existing playground was completely reimagined to complement the newly constructed aquatic facility and provide a unique, nature-integrated play experience for the community.

A standout feature of the new design was the innovative use of excess soil from the pool construction. Rather than removing it, the material was repurposed to form a sculpted mound that became a central design element. This natural landform served multiple purposes: it created a visual and physical separation from the surrounding park, allowed slides to follow the natural slope, provided a bridge connection to elevated play features, and supported a fully accessible path to the top of the slide area—ensuring fun for all children, regardless of ability.

The design also celebrated the site’s existing natural character. A wooded portion of the playground was preserved and thoughtfully integrated into the play experience by incorporating a zip line that winds through the trees without requiring the removal of additional vegetation.

This creative and environmentally sensitive approach not only enhanced the functionality and accessibility of the playground but also reinforced the City’s commitment to sustainability and innovative design.
